Storytelling 101: How to Make Your Life’s Plot Twist Work for You

As icon and fellow girl boss, Serena Kerrigan, once said, “Do it for the plot.” She was onto something. Every twist, turn, and unexpected bump in the road is an opportunity to craft your own personal narrative for you or your business. Whether you’re building a brand, starting a business, or simply sharing your journey with the world, your story has the power to connect, inspire, and elevate your presence.

5 Step Guide to Thickening The Plot

  1. Write it out: Bullet points, drawings, journal entries – pick your poison. No judgement zone. Just. Start. Writing.

  2. Defining moments: What was your pivot moment? Or What was your “Aha!” moment? How did you overcome your struggles, failures and breakthroughs? Don’t skip the messy!!! The people love an underdog.

  3. Who is your audience? This is crucial to telling your story effectively. Find out how your target audience communicates and put yourself in front of them. Knowing your audience is key to finding out what platform to invest your time, energy and $$$ into.

  4. Bring it to life: Depending on your audience, decide your plan of attack. Will it be Instagram posts, email blasts, Snapchat, Facebook posts?

  5. Bottom line and Call to Action: What is your TLDR? What should your audience know after you share your story? What are key takeaways? What should your audience do now after you’ve shared your story?

How Do You Want to Tell Your Story?

After solidifying your story you need to decide how you will communicate your story. Does a certain medium of storytelling come to mind right away or are you still figuring out which type of communication aligns best with your audience? A method of storytelling we are most fond of is visual storytelling because of its ability to captivate and connect in ways words alone can't. Instead of simply telling people what you do, show them.
